Nate Oakley is a Photographer based in Wellington, Aotearoa.

The Journey

Born in Brighton, raised in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Britain was familiar but was never meant to be home.

Nate always had a huge interest in photography; even from young he often experimented with different styles of photography, learning different techniques, theory and different formats. A traveller at heart, Nate travelled across Europe and USA, absorbing culture, landscape & architectural beauty, always looking to improve.

A permanent move to New Zealand created an opportunity to reimagine his journey with photography, drawing upon his creativity and setting course for devotion to his photographic creativity.

Experience

Wellington became home; he set up his photography business under the name of PhotographybyNEO in 2019. He built a network of photographers, models and contacts that allowed him to undertake numerous experimental portraiture projects, demonstrated within the Projects page. Nate also undertook several professional, paid weddings.

Nate quickly built up his photography profile, and exhibited in two Wellington-based galleries: Walrus Gallery and Thistle Hall. A third exhibition is currently in the works with Te Auaha, utilising a mix medium of his photography and art.

Between 2020 to 2021, Nate professionally taught photography classes for Photographers ranging from absolute beginners to experienced. Based in Wellington, he led practical field-based lessons, teaching from the basics to experimental styles. This was an amazing experience, supporting his community doing what he loves, and making money for doing so.

Inspirations & Style

A vision for wanting to capture a sense, person or moment. Creating a sense of escapism; portraying the unique and individualised place we all have envisioned in this world.

Drawing upon, and highlighting the individuality and personality of the people and places he has come across on his journey.

Particularly in his portraiture, Nate utilises a mix of digital and film cameras to express his style. For digital photography he sports a Sony A7iii, however using his 1973 Olympus OM-1 shooting with B&W Kodak T-Max 400 35mm film is his favourite; film really captures a particular fleeting moment, encapsulated forever.
